The third eye often attracts a lot of attention, especially to people deeply interested in spiritual traditions.

 

It is often stated that the opening of the third eye leads to spiritual awakening and the development of supernatural powers.

 

However, before going into any detailed discussion of the third eye, we must ask a very important question: so what is the third eye? And where is it?

 

In this post, I am going to discuss the physical correlate of the spiritual eye, and what the eye means in terms of spiritual growths.

 

About The Cerebrospinal Fluid And The Third Eye

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a liquid that surrounds the human central nervous system.

 

The human central nervous system is largely composed of two parts: the brain and the spinal cord.

 

It has for long been known that the CSF functions as a cushion that protects the central nervous system from external shock.

 

However, there exists an assertion that the CSF has other roles too: creating human consciousness.

 

While the assertion that the CSF plays a central role in expressing the spirit as the consciousness remains a hypothesis, I believe that it is a hypothesis worth investigating, because the hypothesis has a great potential to explain the features of human consciousness previously not accessed by science.

 

According to the hypothesis, the CSF is a fluid where the spiritual energy flows, and it is through the interaction between the CSF and the brain cells that make the wonderful phenomenon of human consciousness possible. In other words, the CSF can be viewed as a source of qualia, or subjective experience.

 

Moreover, the third ventricle is the physical correlate of the third eye. Positioned at approximately the center of the human brain, the third ventricle is in contact with multiple important brain structures such as the pineal gland, the optic chiasm, the pituitary stalk et cetera. According to the hypothesis, the supernatural abilities of the third eye is made possible by the interaction between the CSF and the cells that line the third ventricle.

 

This claim is not without a possibility to be true, because the CSF in the third ventricle is indeed in contact with aforementioned important brain regions and therefore has a potential to make the simultaneous activation of multiple brain structures possible. There also is an explanation of how the CSF and the surrounding brain cells can exchange information. The ventricles are lined by ependymal cells and these cells have hairs on their surfaces. These hairs may perceive changes within the CSF and use that signal to process information.

 

If so, vibration of the CSF inside the third ventricle may be what creates the supernatural experiences that people sometimes report regarding their third eyes.

 

How can we make the CSF vibrate? It’s very simple. You just need to breathe.

 

While I acknowledge that the hypothesis cannot be considered scientific as of now, it definitely is an interesting topic to explore.

 

What Happens When The Third Eye Opens

It is often claimed that the opening of the third eye allows one to use supernatural abilities such as telepathy, seeing the future et cetera.

 

While it is true that contemporary sciences cannot yet deal with these topics, various religions have already said a lot about these unusual capacities.

 

For instance, Buddhism acknowledges that via continuous training, a person can develop six supernatural abilities including hearing the sound from very distant places, seeing the future et cetera.

 

Of course, Buddhism emphasizes that the most important and potent capacity is reaching the nirvana, or getting completely out of the cycle of reincarnations called the samsara in Buddhist traditions.

 

These supernatural abilities accepted by Buddhism may be what the opening of the third eye enables.

 

Is There A Need To Open The Third Eye?

This presumably is the most important topic of this post.

 

If the third eye exists and if opening it allows for splendid experiences, should we try to open the third eye?

 

The answer is, you don’t have to.

 

I agree with what Buddhists say: the strongest supernatural ability is to get out of the cycle of reincarnations. While abilities such as seeing the future do sound interesting, they aren’t very important because once we realize that the life in the physical world is just a short journey carefully created to make an environment in which us, the spirits, can grow, we quickly realize that there’s no point in being very powerful in the material realm.

 

What we need more is the knowledge and understanding of the spiritual realm, so that when the time comes, we can transcend the material realm together and enter the spiritual realm, our real homes.

 

Therefore, the opening of the third eye shouldn’t be the ultimate goal. It may be an intermediate step that assists with studying spirituality, but still, it cannot be the ultimate destination.
