ToggleDiscussions Regard The Seat Of Spirit
The Seat Of Spirit is an interesting concept that has been widely discussed.
For instance, Rene Descartes proclaimed that the spirit resides in the pineal gland.
However, while a pineal gland plays an important biological role of adjusting a circadian rhythm, it probably isn’t where the spirit is located.
It is more likely that the spirit resides within the thalamus.
An Interesting Story For People Who Don’t Believe In Spirits
It’s perfectly okay not to believe in the spirit for now, because you’ll know when the time comes.
However, I would like to hereby introduce an interesting story.
If our minds were pure material, it must be possible some day to create a perfect digital copy of our minds and upload it somewhere, so that we can enjoy an endless life.
However, once you think of it, the whole thing doesn’t make sense.
First, the instant you create a digital copy of your mind, you start to have two consciousnesses. What does this even mean?
Secondly, let’s say that the digital copy was made. Then, if you die, would the digital copy still be with qualia, so that it feels me?
Unlikely.
Why Thalamus?
Thalamus is an interesting structure.
For instance, highly trained meditators often experience deactivation of the default mode network.
The default mode network refers to the regions of brain activated upon the concentration on the self.
Thalamus is extensively connected to this network.
Moreover, located at approximately the center of the brain, thalamus is a central relay station that mediates communication between various brain regions.
It is my current speculation that specific neurons in the thalamus somehow play a unique role in making the interaction of body and spirit possible.
What could it be?
I personally speculate that some neurons in the thalamus could have a circularly arranged protein complexes that enable a photon to undergo circular motion.
It could be the microtubule or the Arc protein. Experimental data would be needed to find out the truth.
This also can explain neuroplasticity.
As long as some central regions of the brain are intact, our brains, even after a neurological damage, can still restore many of its original functions.
A Search For The Seat Of Spirit
In order to truly understand the spirit, we must have an empirical evidence of where the spirit resides.
In that sense, the possibility of thalamus as the seat of spirit provides an exciting probability of potentially discovering the fundamental laws of the cosmos.
